Hijikata Toshizo (土方歳三, Hijikata Toshizō) was once the feared “demon” vice commander of the Shinsengumi, an elite Japanese police force that patrolled the imperial capital of Kyoto in the nineteenth century. His pledge to protect the Tokugawa regime eventually cost him his life at the Battle of Hakodate, the final battle of the Boshin War, where he was shot to death from behind near the Ippongi Kanmon while leading his fellow officers on horseback. As an End, Hijikata can manifest ghostly images of his former comrades to cut down his enemies. He serves as the main rival of Shimazu Toyohisa.

Background[]

As an End, Hijikata is the frontline fighter for the Black King. He leads the charge in taking the Kingdom of Carneades, summoning the spirits of his fallen Shinsengumi officers to help cut down the enemy soldiers. He is later ordered by Rasputin and the Black King to lead the troops to combat the Drifters in the capital of the Orte Empire, shifting their focus from seizing Orte to destroying it in order to prevent the Drifters from obtaining it.

As the Drifters and their army decimate the Ends' troops, Hijikata gives orders for his soldiers to break into smaller units and disperse into the streets setting the city ablaze while heading to Orte's capitol buildings. Hijikata and Toyohisa meet in the street and engage one another in a deadly duel, with Hijikata using the ghostly images of dead Shinsengumi fighters to attack Toyohisa. When their army is destroyed, the Black King orders Hijikata to withdraw on dragon back from his fight against Toyohisa, who is left badly injured.

Appearance[]

Hijikata was once said to be taller than the average Japanese person, and was very handsome. With shoulder-length black hair and steel-gray eyes, his face constantly holds a stoic and grim appearance.

Personality[]

Similar to Anastasia, Hijikata is cold-blooded and will follow through with any orders given to him by the Black King without a second thought. Though usually calm, with a neutral expression upon his face, Hijikata is known to fall into fits of anger when facing those who incite rebellion against the Black King. When angered, his rage seems to match Joan's.

Abilities[]

He has the ability to summon an army of his fallen comrades from within the Shinsengumi in spectral form, he is also an accomplished master swordsman with minimal knowledge of hand-to-hand combat.

Once holding the position as vice commander of the elite police, Hijikata holds great leadership skills as well as being a good tactician in the battlefield.
